Ben LUISI Dynamic ribonucleoprotein complexes in the control of bacterial gene expression

In many bacterial species, the endoribonuclease RNase E plays a key role in the post-transcriptional control of gene expression. The enzyme acts in the decisive, first step to initiate turnover of RNA, and it is also involved in processing precursors including those of certain small regulatory RNAs. A model will be described proposing how RNase E and related enzymes recognise features in RNA substrates and how the enzyme can be guided by regulatory RNA, in conjunction with RNA chaperones such as Hfq, for action on targeted transcripts. The model also describes a role of higher-order ribonucleoprotein assemblies in the orchestrated handover of substrates to ribonucleases that results in efficient and timely riboregulation. A proposal for co-translational and co-transcriptional surveillance will be presented, based on structural and functional results.
