Abstract : Plants have evolved a wide variety of life history strategies, from annual plants that complete their life cycle in a year to long-lived trees that can take decades to reach reproductive maturity. We demonstrate through stochastic modeling that this variation has significant consequences for community assembly and biodiversity. Applying this approach to a neotropical forest plot in Barro Colorado Island, Panama, we can explain fluctuations in species abundances across a large and diverse system using only census and life history data.
